Ledger recovery: lost PIN, bricked Nano, missing words
A Ledger device is just a secure shell around a standard 24-word BIP39 seed. If you have all 24 words, the device almost never matters — your funds can be restored on any compatible wallet. The hard cases are the ones where the seed is incomplete, the PIN is forgotten and the seed was never written down, or the recovery sheet got partially destroyed.
Never type your 24 words into a website, a chat, or any "Ledger recovery" tool you find through search. Ledger will never ask for them. Real recovery only ever enters your seed into a wallet or device you control offline.
The clean case: PIN forgotten, 24 words intact
If you still have all 24 words: wipe the Ledger (3 wrong PINs will do it), then restore from your recovery sheet. Or, faster, restore the same 24 words into a fresh Ledger, a Trezor, or a software wallet that supports BIP39 (e.g. Electrum for BTC, MetaMask for ETH). Verify balances on a block explorer before moving anything.
Bricked or damaged device, seed intact
A dead screen, a swollen battery, water damage, or a failed firmware update all look catastrophic but rarely matter. The private keys live in the secure element, and the secure element is irrelevant the moment you have the 24 words. Restore onto any BIP39 wallet and sweep the funds.
The hard cases we actually see
- 23 of 24 words, one word smudged, lost, or unsure between two similar words.
- All 24 words but they fail the BIP39 checksum — a transcription error somewhere.
- Right words, wrong order — a partial memory of the sequence.
- Forgotten PIN AND the recovery sheet is lost or destroyed.
- A 25th 'passphrase' (hidden wallet) the user set up years ago and partially remembers.
These are recoverable in most cases with the right tooling: checksum-aware word search, derivation-path sweeps across the common Ledger paths, and bounded passphrase search when there's a partial memory. The keys never leave your possession.
